Yorik

Village of Yorik

A largely farming community with a central village, and a booming mine industry, Yorik, in the duchy of Gelrich, was once a hub for some of the most unusual occurrences and dangerous adventures in all of Harodom, and in much of the Lakes Region as a whole. The seat of the Barony of Yorik and the Duchy of Gelrich, the town is famous for its iron and silver mines, much of which was absorbed into the newly formed Barony of New Caladon in 2015. Yorik is right within the Green Walk of Harodom, a large temperate farmland that stretches across the southern end of the country, and has many fertile farms.

Founding

Nomadic minotaur miners were technically the first to settle in the area now known as Yorik, taking advantage of the rich local iron deposits to establish a thriving mineral concern in 2001 A.T. It was not until 2002 that the first human miners arrived, sparking tension between the two groups; it was, fortunately, discovered that the deposits were rich enough to support multiple digging sites. By 2004, the mining concerns had grown large enough that the town of Yorik was founded to provide supplies and support services to the miners; the first farms sprang up, taking advantage of the rich soil. The Barony of Yorik encompassed the new town, as well as a number of other nearby settlements, with Baron Felrith named the Baron of these newly incorporated lands.

Although Harodom unquestionably settled to take advantage of the local iron deposits, this was not the only reason why resources poured in from across duchy to ensure that the new barony and town were well established. Miners and explorers had discovered that beneath Yorik lay an ancient Undercity, magically transported beneath stone and earth in some bygone day, with great magical pillars holding up a ward that kept within it hordes of the undead and infernal forces, as well as the Twins, Sarna and Tivolous. With the pretext of defending the new town, a local garrison was established, against the possibility that this ancient prison might breach and the inhabitants escape, spilling out over the Lakes Region.

The Town of Yorik

Yorik’s inhabitants have traditionally been mostly farmers and miners; it has, at different points in its history, had representatives of the merchant Guild House Toth, although the perils of the area have made this presence inconsistent. The seat of the Barony of Yorik, and later the seat of the Duchy of Gelrich, a great deal of trade came through Yorik, carrying the iron ore away, and ensuring that local craftspeople, merchants, and the unusually large population of adventurers were well supplied. Yorik had a large node, although following the events leading to the end of Yorik’s role as an adventuring hub, this has been deactivated, and is unlikely to be functional again for several decades.

Although it gained an only somewhat warranted reputation of being constantly in need of resources for repair, Yorik’s farms and mines meant that the area was in fact quite rich. Its noble leadership was varied, as nobility elevated in Yorik tended to be martial in nature, and were frequently called away to serve in the numerous conflicts that wracked the continent.

Tales of Yorik

Although listing all of the stories of adventure that occurred in Yorik would take too long to be practicable, the town and its inhabitants were at the centre of a number of incidents over the following twenty years, which contributed to political and social events observed across the near world. The following are just a short list of events which occurred in or around Yorik which would reasonably be heard of outside of the environs of the barony of Yorik.

  • A rebellion against the crown in 2005 A.T. was soundly defeated by the efforts of irregular forces residing in the Yorik region.
  • For reasons not entirely clear, the gods Stasa and Callis briefly experienced a considerable loss of power. Rumours whisper that efforts by Yorik inhabitants somehow reversed this.
  • Cultists of the Greater Infernal Malabaskamakar were discovered in great numbers in the Yorik region, working to call forth their infernal patron.
  • The inhabitants of Yorik were involved as irregular forces and soldiers in the Michian War, cutting supply lines and taking battle to key belligerents.
  • Duke Jagari of Gelrich was revealed to be a worshipper of Stasa, goddess of undeath, and the underlying cause of the Michian War in service to his deity.
  • Following the end of the Michian War, heroes from Yorik were involved in early skirmishes with the Bear Men of Estovic.
  • Yorik hosted the first contingent of ambassadors from the far-off island nation of Magedom to Harodom.
  • Yorik forces found and liberated the demigod Hemulis from imprisonment by forces of Estovic; the god takes vengeance upon his former captors, effectively ending the Estovic War.
  • Former Duke Jagari of Gelrich is stripped of his noble titles and sentenced to finishment by execution within Yorik. Baron Gregory Hayden of Yorik is named the new Duke of Gelrich.
  • A powerful dragon named Timnaeous appears in the areas in and around Yorik.
  • The god Bard was awoken from slumber by heroes of Yorik, to prevent the ascension of the godling Marowit who sought to gain power by consuming her in her sleep.
  • Yorik was once again at the centre of a major conflict with a wrathful Greater Being known as the Wilder: through the unleashing of powerful magic, the Wilder is undone.
  • A contingent of Harodom forces led by a noble party from Yorik headed to Michian to fight an escaped lich.
  • Rumours of a plague, centred around the area of Yorik, effectively throttled major trade routes between Stelton and Hoggsport.
  • Forces from Yorik did battle with Valikar the Immortal-Killer, who sought to dethrone the gods, and murdered countless Harodom regular forces. They were triumphant, and Valikar disappeared, with the appearance of a being known as the Guardian.
  • Hemulite faithful railed against Yorik, seeking to impart some dire message to its inhabitants.
  • Powerful spellcasting infernals in service to Sasha appearing and acting around Yorik, made their presence known at the same time as a Spell Plague which threatened all casters. The demons slew many of the leaders of the Guild Arcane.
  • The Twins, Sarna and Tivolous, threatened escape from their underground Undercity prison. The forces of Yorik were able to fight them back, and ultimately defeated both of the ancient horrors. The Undercity remained a perilous place, filled with undead and monsters, but the tale of the Twins came to an end.
  • The unearthing of an Undead Dracolych, a powerful life-stealing monster, led to a flight of dragon sightings in the area of Yorik, as dragons and mortals alike battled the ancient undead.
  • Massive earthquakes wracked the area around Yorik, as ancient Kazzokian forces representing primordial fears threatened to bring about an end to civilized life within the Lakes Region.
  • The defeat of the Demon of Ruin coincided with the harrowing of the Undercity. The major threats to the area defeated, the town of Yorik became a much more peaceful place, and its adventuring inhabitants, though they may visit or even reside there, moved on to new adventures elsewhere…

The Undercity

Although the area around Yorik is home to numerous ruins, caves, and mystical locations, perhaps the greatest of these was the Undercity; a city that had stood where modern-day Yorik was founded, which, at the end of the War of the Twins, was sent underground by the groundbreaking spellwork of hundreds of clerics and mages in service to the Alliance. The Undercity had a barrier, maintained by pillars, magical fabrications that fed on the life force of powerful spellcasters, magical beings, and artifacts.

The city itself was a treasure trove – and a trap. Many buildings were warded with powerful spells that would turn the incautious to ash, and powerful undead and infernals in service to the trapped Twins walked the streets. In the fullness of time, the dragon Timnaeous made his home in the Undercity, forming a third belligerent in the battles between the villainous siblings.

For a time, discussion of the Undercity whatever became forbidden, for fear that treasure seekers would go there and perish, or worse, damage the barrier in such a way to allow for the release of the Undercity’s inhabitants. With time, that prohibition waned, and the inhabitants did indeed find means of egress.

The Undercity was destroyed in a magical explosion that took out most all of its inhabitants, as well as a powerful demon threatening the ruin of the world. If there were relics or inhabitants who did survive, their fate is unknown.
